Exercises

Spiritual exercises are essential to your training. Only a disciplined mind can meditate or contemplate. Philosophy will gain you nothing without developing your ability to think clearly and coherently. Most important of all, unless you can control your own thinking, you will not be able to still your thoughts – you will never be able to enter the Silence. Unless you can do this, you won’t be able to hear the still, small voice of God. I don’t normally like to put things in such negative terms. But I do it now to emphasize how important it is to train your mind in the way that has been prescribed by mystics and sages throughout the millennia. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can skip this part of your training. You cannot! Knowledge is not the same as experience. You need both. Without experience, there is no wisdom. Without knowledge, there is no understanding. Understanding your spiritual experiences brings balance in your life, along with vitality, creativity, effectiveness, and joy. So, begin by laying a firm foundation, and remember that “Unless a house be built by God, he who builds it labors in vain.”
